Alphabet to Invest $15bn for Constructing AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet plans to commit $15 billion to build an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The facility, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, is going to be a component of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs spread across 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest AI facility that we are committing funds to anywhere in the world, outside of the United States of America," Thomas Kurien said at an gathering in Delhi, the national capital recently, noting that the funding is to be distributed across the coming five years.
The announcement arrives during a period American President Donald Trump has been asking US firms to give priority to domestic investment.
India's Growing Role in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The nation has risen as a prime location for artificial intelligence facilities. The country's inexpensive data services and quickly expanding online population have made it a hub for cloud and AI expansion for technology leaders.
"This center will deliver our pioneering tech solutions to businesses and consumers in the country, accelerating artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion nationwide," said Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Specifics of the Project
A formal agreement to conclude the venture will be signed soon, state authorities said.
"This represents a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, innovation, and global standing," stated the technology official Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The venture is included in the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to establish 6GW of data center capability by 2029.
Data centers are tangible infrastructures that accommodate the networking and computing devices that organizations use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.
These include hosting servers, data storage systems and networking hardware like network routers and security firewalls, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to run them.
Funding Benefits
In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been offering subsidised land and energy to entice global investors.
Sector Expansion
India's data centre industry has expanded quickly over the past five years, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and almost increasing threefold its capability from 2019.
